Their Final Moments by Clarissa Kelley

April 11 1:37 AM:
Five bullets fired and he fled. Startled by the sound of the gunshots, neighbors called the police. It took them a while to reach 1763 Dyker Main Street, the Bennecker resident.  Knock Knock. No answer. Knock Knock. Still no answer. Police lights and sirens woke up the neighbors. They gathered around the whole block of Dyker Main Street murmering amongst each other as to what could’ve happened. Finally after knocking for three minutes, police knocked down the door. They walked into a horror movie; a dead body, a man, at one end of the trailer. Investigating further, they found a woman alive. She had her hand on her hip. She was losing blood quickly.  Police called paramedics in hope they can save her so she could talk and tell them who commited the murders. Detective Manson and Todd both arrive and police inform them of what they were about to walk into.

April 10 6:37 AM:
“Wake up Andrew. You’re going to be late for school.” called out his mom.
“I’m already up mom. I’ll be out in a few. Is breakfast ready?”
“Shit” she said to herself. “I completely forgot. Looks like you’re going to have to wait until you have lunch.”
“Mom seriously?” he yelled outside his door. “I’m tired of you doing this. This is the third time this week. Where are my black boots?” Andrew started rustling through his stuff looking for his boots making a mess in his room. “Mom, where the hell are my boots!?”
“Wear something else. I forgot to pick them up at the dry cleaners yesterday.” Andrew opens the door to his room and charges to his mom.
“I’ve told you countless times to stop touching my stuff! Now I have to change my whole outfit because you didn’t pick up my boots!”

April 10 7:08 AM:
Andrew and his mom head towards the car in silence. As they buckle in their seat belts, she stopped to look at him.
“I already told you to stop talking to me the way you do. I don’t disrespect you, so don’t disrespect me! I know our life haven’t been the same since your dad left us but we are going to have to move on.”
“Move on? How can I move on? It’s your fault he left us! If you didn’t pick a fight with him every minute for little things, we would still be living with him. It’s your fault he kicked us out! Now we live in this little trailer.”
“I know its small but we just have to manage.” He put his headphones in his ears and they drive away.

April 10 7:48 AM:
Andrew’s friend Justin comes up to him giving him a high five but Andrew purposely ignores it.
“What’s up Andrew? Who was it with this time? Mick or your mom?”
“She forgot to make me breakfast…”
“Ahh so your mom…”
“and she didn’t pick up my boots at the dry cleaners. I had to change my whole outfit this morning!”
“That’s why you’re mad? That doesn’t seem like much. My mom once forgot me in Connecticut… does that help?”
“No because we live three hours from there so you could’ve easily driven here.”
“I was twelve…”
“Well that was once. My mom constantly forgets my breakfast in the morning.” “You’re overreacting dude. Don’t pick a fight with your mom. I know you’re still mad at her. It was your dad that left, not her. She’s still in your life, not him. So relax dude. Besides all you wear is black. I’ve seen your closet. That’s all you have. Black shirts, black pants, black shoes. It’s not the end of the world. You still have your vans and converse. Anyway, it’s time for second period. I’ll see you 5th period.” Justin starts walking away but turns back to Andrew.
“By the way, you missed homeroom and we had to complete a 10 minute survey and the first 4 from each class to finish got a permission to a trip and they get to go to on a college tour.”
“So?”
“Its at whatever college they want to visit. If you were here earlier, maybe you would’ve had the chance to go on a college tour to UCLA.” This outraged Andrew because it was his dream college. Andrew went on with his day mad.

April 10 4:10 PM:
“Hey mom. You know that school that I really want to go to, you know, UCLA?”
“Yeah…?”
“I could’ve went on their college tour but I’m not going…why? Because I was late this morning. And whose fault is that? Yours! You always screw things up for me! I hate you!” Andrew’s mother turns around and slaps Andrew leaving a red hand mark on his face.
“Mom, I’m-I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to say that.”
“GO TO YOUR ROOM!” As he leaves, he turns around and witnesses tears falling from her eyes.

April 10 4:40 PM:
Andrew’s mother’s boyfriend walked into the house drunk and into the kitchen and found her crying. Stammering to speak, he asked “W-wh-what happened babe?”
“I got fired from work today. I was late and it was the tenth time in a row. Andrew is always making me late and today I didn’t get there until 8:40 AM.  Traffic was horrible, my phone was acting up and I had no way to call to tell my boss I was going to be late.” He comforted her and walked her to her bedroom.
“And this morning, me and Andrew got into another argument. I don’t know what’s gotten into him. This time, he yelled at me and…”
“Its okay babe. Just get some rest. I’ll have a talk with him”

April 10 5:20 PM:
“Andrew open the door, ” called out Mick. Andrew opened the door to his room but slightly so only his head was poking out the door.
“Are you going to let me inside?”
“We can talk here.” They stared at each other until Andrew broke the silence.
“What do you want Mick? I’m busy. Andrew leaned in closer and sniffed Mick. “And why do you reek of alcohol? ”
He raised his voice, shouting “That is none of your business! Now tell me what happened this morning?
“Okay so I’m getting ready…and my mom tells me she didn’t make me breakfast and…and she tells me she forgot my boots in the dry cleaners so…” His voice trailed off, “She really gets on my nerves and… I told her I hated her but I didnt-”
“Let me stop you there.” Mick pushed and stumbled his way into Andrew’s room and punched Andrew in the face.
“Don’t ever talk about her like that you little prick! That is my girlfriend and your mother! She gave birth to you and she could easily take that away in 2.5 seconds. Understand!? I don’t ever want to hear that you told her you hated her.” Andrew picked up his head only to witness blood gushing from his mouth.
“And another thing, you’re fucking 16 years old. Stop acting like a spoiled bitch and do your own shit! Stop relying on your mom to make you breakfast and pick up your boots at the dry cleaners. Stay in here until I tell you to come out, GOT THAT!?” He walked out slamming the door leaving Andrew speechless.

April 10 7:20 PM:
Andrew sneaked off to his mom’s room and started searching. He looked in her underwear drawer. Nothing. He looked in her closet and found a box with a lock. He took out the box from its place and picked the lock with a bobby pin. He opened the box and took out the gun. (They first bought that gun because they were robbed earlier and the police took a while to come and the family felt they couldn’t rely on the police so they bought a gun.) Andrew put everything back where it was, took the gun to his room and locked his door.

April 10 11:10 PM:
Andrew’s mother knocked on his door telling him to sleep. She got no answer and assumed he fell asleep.  Andrew got up from his bed and went to his mirror staring at his mouth. Mick really pushed him this time. He peaked out his room and sees Mick walking to the bathroom and it pissed him off because he didn’t like the fact that he was sleeping over. Mick turned to him and started thrusting his groin back and forth sexually, showing him that that’s what he was going to do to his mom tonight.

(Mick and Andrew have history together. When his mother first stared seeing Mick, he didn’t know about it. One day he cut school early and went home. Opening the door, he sees a man butt naked in his kitchen and it startled him. He attacked Mick and started punching him telling him to get out of his house until his mother walked into the house and pulls Andrew off of Mick telling him to leave him alone. Andrew’s mother told him that she was seeing Mick. Andrew, shocked by the news, left the house upset that his mother didn’t tell him. Ever since then, Mick tried to get Andrew in trouble with his mother. He got Andrew kicked out of his house when Mick broke into their house drunk and trashed their living room and blamed Andrew. He had to stay with Justin for a few days. Mick constantly yelled at Andrew and Andrew always reminded Mick that he wasn’t his father. He complained to his mother telling her that Andrew hits him but she ignored it.)

April 11 12:45 AM:
Andrew, upset by what he just witnessed, knew he has had it with Mick. He went over to his mirror and started practicing how he was going to shoot him. He felt no remorse for what he was about to do.

April 11 1:05 AM:
Andrew walked out of his room and opened his mother’s room and sees both of them knocked out. Disgusted because he knew they just had sex, he got his gun ready. He pointed it at Mick but paused. He stood there and waited until he moved.

April 11 1:20 AM:
He finally moved but nothing.  Mick got up to use the bathroom and saw a figure at the other end of the trailer.
“Andrew?” he called out. Three shots fired and Mick started tumbling down the stairs. Andrew quickly ran near Mick’s body and sees his mother standing by her bedroom door.
“What have you done?” Startled by his mom, he picked up the gun and shot her too. Bang! Bang! He looked at the gun and his mother and tears started falling from his eyes. He didn’t mean to shoot her. He fell to his knees and saw blood rushing out the open wound on her hip. Startled, he grabbed his backpack that he packed with money, got on his bike and took off.

April 11 1:45 AM:
Looking around the house, police found Andrew’s room but not him. Suspicions arose and police started pointing fingers at him. The Detectives started questioning the people that were gathered outside.

“Only the mother and her son lived here. I believe she was seeing someone.”
“ I never heard any fighting. Well except that one day when the boy’s mother kicked him out the house.”
“Yeah the boys name is Andrew. He goes to my school. He has one friend, Justin.”
“No surprise Andrew would shoot someone. He always looked pissed when he came to school. I think he was psycho.”
“ Is Andrew okay?”
“And you are…?
“My name is Justin. Is Andrew okay?”
“Justin, we’re going to need you to come back to the station with us. We have questions about your friend Andrew.”

April 11 2:23 AM:
“So Justin, how long have you and Andrew been friends?”
“I’ve known him for a year now. We were partnered up for an English project and we got along pretty well so we started talking more. Please don’t tell me he did this.”
“You seem so concerned about him. Why is that?”
“He is a good friend of mine. A lot of kids in our school don’t really like him because he’s different. You know, always wearing black, black eyeliner, black nails. He was considered the freak of the school.”
“ What do you know about his home life?”
“I know he always butt heads with his mother and if that wasn’t stress enough, ever since she started seeing that guy uhh Rick…No Mick, he was always in a bad mood. I know they once had a physical fight. And they butt heads more than him and his mom.”
“Well we can’t seem to find him right now.  If he happens to call you, please give me a call.”
“Sure…”

April 11 5:39 AM
“Andrew Bennecker was just spotted on highway 68. Suspect is fleeing in a red motorcycle”
Police cars were on his tail. Detective Manson told Andrew over his megaphone to pull over but he kept going. Finally, Andrew came at a U-turn throwing him off balance. He was taken into custody and was taken to the police station. There, they were badgering him but he was silent. Twenty minutes passed and eventually he came clean. He knew they had already figured it out. Reporters were outside of the police and Detective Manson came out and gave the reporters the story.  The story made front page and it was on almost every channel. It was so big because the last murder the town had experienced was in the 1980s.

April 11th 6:49 AM:
In the middle of the press conference, a policewoman interrupted Detective Manson.
“Detective there’s a phone call for you in regards to the kids mom”
“Yes hello?”
“It seems she didn’t make it. We had to perform a surgery on her and she died during the process.”
“Thank you.”

“Detective who was that on the phone? Was it Mercy Hospital?
“Did the kids mom make it out alive?”
“How deep was her gun wound?”
“Unfortunately, she didn’t survive the gun shot. They performed a surgery on her and it seems she died in the middle of the procedure. That is all.”

April 29 11:39
“After hearing both sides of the story, what is the verdict?”
“Your honor, after discussing amongst each other, we find the defendant guilty for first degree murder.”

May 13 7:05 PM
Dear Journal,
It’s been pretty hectic here in jail. I’m still having nightmares of that night I killed Mick. I don’t want to be here in jail. It’s horrible. They make me do the guy’s laundry every day. I wish I were home with my mom. Her macaroni and cheese with breadcrumbs as a topping are delicious. But she never visits me, only in my dreams. I hope she isn’t mad at me for shooting her. I didn’t mean to…

May 15 3:08 PM
 Dear journal,
My mom has been sleeping for over a month now. Her bed is probably more comfortable than mine is. My mattress is so thin and I could feel the springs poking me. I wish to leave from here and join my mom. I know what I did was wrong. I regret it so much. I wish to go home, but this is my home now.

May 18 5:54 PM
Dear Mom,
This is the first and last time I’ll ever be writing. I feel like I have no purpose in life. The guys here raped me last night. It was horrible. I called out for help but no one came. This place is horrible. I wish I could take back what I did. I didn’t want to kill Mick but it felt like it was the only way to get rid of him. Killing is never the answer because in the end, I got caught. Having this new life, this jail life, isn’t worth it. I was going to be someone. But I can forget that now. I can only dream about that life.
